Lesson 1 - What road lies ahead?

Tuesday's lesson focused on introducing us to the fascinating world of technology and change. The discussion began with all of us introducing ourselves and giving an answer to the question:

"What do you know about technology and world change?"

The question marked the start to learning about both technology and change. It led into a video exploring the changes taking place in our lives with multiple facts and statistics. The video explored the affect of technology on our lives. It displayed to us the major changes happening around us. The video made me realize what a fast paced world we live in and how every single new device or idea has influenced our world. As a whole, I thought the video displayed change in a positive light. In my opinion, change is not always positive in fact it often has a somewhat negative affect on our lives. I thought it managed to convey how we get so caught up in our changing world that we don't realize the long term affects. For example, the video brought up an interesting point:

"We are currently preparing our children for jobs that do not yet exist"

The video's aim is not to raise the issue of our world changing too rapidly that we do not realize where we are headed but it made me think that we are moving too fast. The idea of preparing children for jobs that are nonexistent makes one think about how important these jobs are. We are able to preform perfectly well without these jobs now so why do we need them in the future? Sometimes I think we make life more difficult for ourselves with technology. We do gain valuable information from technology as well but how many people do we see on a daily basis bent over there handphones typing? Or Facebook-ing there friends while sitting next to other friends? We often get lost in world of technology that's been created.

Homo sapiens or Homo slobiens?

Another part of class that stuck with me is the picture of the evolution of technology. It makes us question what path we are headed in. Are we heading towards a smarter, fitter race of humans enhance by the use of technology? Or will Homo sapiens be followed by the Homo slobiens? This has been a question posed by many from American health organizations to the cute animation, Wall-E. Although it is a question that has been dissected by many it still remains unanswerable. No one is sure whether we are headed in the right direction.

Finding a balance

Although I bashed technology and change quite a lot I do believe that, if it is used right, technology has impacted our world positively. Now, with technology, there's no such thing as "loosing touch" with someone (but we have to find the right balance between reality and social networking). Also, we are slowly becoming a paperless nation with ebooks and computers. Thus, many things have impacted us in a positive manner but there is the matter of finding a balance between two extremes.
